“…he’s fancied to build on that promising reappearance run and take this.”

Timeform on Bombastic

Back
Bombastic – 14:10 Chepstow

Although Bombastic was down the field on reappearance at Doncaster in March, he shaped as though he would be better for the run, leading and gradually coming across to the stand-side rail, before fading out of things inside the final furlong. Dropped 2 lb in the weights for that outing, he arrives here 9 lb lower than his last winning mark, and, considering that success came on his second outing last season, he’s fancied to build on that promising reappearance run and take this. Espresso Freddo was shaping well on the AW when last seen, so he can get involved if tuned up after a break.

Lay
Freckles – 13:40 Chepstow

Freckles is likely to be a warm favourite here, after taking a considerable step forward for the step up to one mile to open his account at Brighton last time out. He’s open to more improvement yet on the back of that, but a 6 lb rise makes things tough, and there are some solid alternatives in here, namely Club Tropicana and Lady Alavesa. Both wouldn’t have to improve a great deal in order to have strong claims of taking this and with conditions at Chepstow likely to be a long way from the good to firm ground Freckles relished last time out, she looks worth opposing here.

Smart Stat
National Glory – 15:55 Chepstow

23% – Archie Watson’s strike rate in mid season

Storm Melody is likely to be very popular for this, considering that he arrives here on very favourable terms indeed, but he’s likely to be a short price in the betting, and there could be some value in taking him on with National Glory. He’s yet to taste victory in 13 starts since joining Archie Watson last December, but he’s been shaping well at the moment, and looked to be in good form when third at Chepstow last time, when not getting the run of the race but rallying well to the line. He’s on a favourable mark at the moment – having dropped 18 lb from his opening handicap mark – and with a weak pace forecast, it would be no surprise to see National Glory put in a bold bid from the front – particularly when you consider his trainer has a good record at this time of year.
