Take nothing for granted
Fight fans are in for a treat this weekend with shows of note taking place in both England and America. All the talk amongst followers of thehas focussed on Tyson Fury’s trip to Vegas where he’ll face hard-hitting German Tom Schwarz in his first outing since suffering that controversial split decision draw with Deontay Wilder late last year.
Fury is expected to win but Andy Ruiz taking Anthony Joshua’s titles in stunning fashion earlier this month shows nothing can be taken for granted in the top division.
Hours before Fury steps into the ring in Sin City, there’s a bout in Leeds that threatens to upstage the main event. Josh Warrington and Kid Galahad meet at the First Direct Arena in a 12-round contest to decide the future of the IBF world featherweight title. This is one that has purists excited, but it’s also a clash that will have casual fans gripped from the opening bell.
Warrington on a devastating run of form
The fighting pride of Leeds, Josh Warrington, goes into this contest as IBF champion of the world and brings with him a devastating run of form. The unbeaten 28-year-old boasts a professional record of 28 wins from as many starts with six of those victories coming inside the distance. Those stats ensure he isn’t known as a concussive puncher, but a man who relies on his polished boxing skills to compete at the highest standard. The 5ft 7inch orthodox was written off by traders when stepping up in the past, but that’s a mistake the money men won’t make again.
Warrington famously upset the odds last May to beat Lee Selby on a split decision at Elland Road, claiming the IBF bauble in the process. Selby, who had lost only one of 27 fights going into that contest, was short-priced favourite in the betting but was cut over both eyes during a gruelling war, before ending on the wrong side of the judges’ decision. Phil Edwards gave Selby the win by four rounds but Alan Davis and Frank Lombardi both awarded it to Josh by two.
The victor won many new fans that night, but he was only getting started. Warrington was then matched with Northern Ireland’s Carl Frampton next time and, again, came out on top. Another points decision, this win was more convincing with all three scorers seeing things in his favour. Having had their fingers burnt opposing Josh, punters now make him hot favourite to beat Kid Galahad on Saturday. He’s [1.39] to claim a 29th win on the Betfair Exchange, while sportsbook users can have 4/6 on anothercheer.
Unbeaten underdog won’t be fazed
Kid Galahad certainly won’t be fazed by facing an unbeaten world champion and major rival as the 26-year-old from Sheffield brings an unblemished record of his own into this contest. Since making a winning debut back in 2009 when outpointing useful journeyman Delroy Spencer over four rounds, Kid quickly rose through the ranks. He beat fans’ favourite Jason Booth on points to claim the WBC International super bantamweight strap early in his career and added the British title in 2013 when stopping James Dickens.
Commonwealth and European awards followed at super bantam before moving up to featherweight. Galahad halted Mexican Jose Cayetano in 10 at Wembley Arena in the summer of 2017 to pick-up the IBF Inter-Continental belt at 126lbs and has won each of his three outings since. A 12-round decision over American Toka Kahn Clary (25-1-0) late last year pushed 5ft 6inch orthodox Galahad into world title contention. He’s now ranked number three in the UK, behind Warrington and Frampton, and 13th in the world, a list topped by Leo Santa Cruz.
Despite bringing winning form and an impressive unbeaten record, Kid Galahad will have to upset the betting if he’s to get his hands on the featherweight world title. The Betfair Exchange has him as a [3.8] shot to come away with the belt, with the draw available at . This promises to be tighter than the betting suggests, and Galahad’s movement will pose the champion problems. It’s worth playing thefor interest stakes.
