Iceland vs Turkey
Competition: Euro 2020 qualifiers
Date: 11 June 2019
Kick-off: 20:45 CET
Iceland beat Albania at home on Saturday, but the day was not all… flowers and joyful songs; they really struggled against a team that are not even a main contender for a top two spot, and it happened at home, not on the road. Plus, a few hours later, Turkey beat France, a result that was very-very bad for Iceland. They were hoping to see the French win all – if possible – matches, letting them… fight it out against the rest of the group teams for the second spot in the table. Now, Turkey are a much-much stronger candidate, making this game an absolute must-win for the Icelanders. Erik Hamrén needs to… pull some magic trick off his sleeve, try shake things up, because if Iceland play against Turkey the same way they played on Saturday against Albania, I seriously-seriously doubt they’ll earn anything more than one point.
Konya proved an awesome home to Senol Günes and his players on Saturday, when they surprised Europe (more like the whole planet) beating World Champions France 2-0(!). The Turks scored twice in the first half, in a matter of 10 minutes, in the 30th and then again in the 40th, catching the French by surprise. More than those two goals, Günes’ tactics and his players’ discipline on the pitch kept France super quiet. It was impressive seeing France go for 45 minutes without creating a single real chance. Turkey gave the French space in the second half, but the score did not change, and actually the Turks could have scored more, threatening every single time they went on a counterattack. That was their fifth win in a row, friendlies and Euro 2020 qualifiers combined, five matches in which they have scored at least two goals in each, and have conceded just one goal(!). They are on nine points from three games in the group, leading.
