The Headline Pick: Ederson (6.0) – Manchester City
Manchester City’s Goalkeeper, Ederson, is given the headline selection: he looks to be the best premium option to start the season with. He’s provided excellent consistency, with 36 clean sheets across two Premier League seasons. Pep Guardiola is notorious for rotating his squad, so Ederson looks to be the safest route into the Manchester City defence: he played every single minute last season. The Brazilian finished the last FPL campaign within the top 3 highest scoring goalkeepers, just behind Liverpool’s Alisson. We recommend Ederson over Alisson (pictured below) since the Liverpool defenders offer much better value for money over their goalkeeper, as they regularly contribute to attacking returns.
Manchester City are now available to back at 10/11in their opening game.
The Budget Pick: Mathew Ryan (4.5) – Brighton
At the opposite end of the price scale, Mathew Ryan comes in as the budget pick. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any £4.0 million priced starting goalkeepers this season and plenty of popular picks at this pice point from the last campaign have gone up to £5.0 million. Mathew Ryan has become a very popular option within the FPL Community as either a cheap set-and-forget option or a rotating goalkeeper. With just one game against Top Six opposition in his first six games, his popularity is obvious. Hopefully Brighton will be on an upwards trajectory under Graham Potter this season and Ryan can replicate his form demonstrated back in 2017/18, where he achieved 10 clean sheets and 124 saves to deliver 146 fantasy points. His understudy, Button, is a useful bench player to sit alongside Ryan.
The VAR Pick: Jordan Pickford (5.5) – Everton
Many Fantasy Premier League managers will be disappointed to see Pickford bumped up to a premium price tag, but with VAR hitting the Premier League this season, he could be fantasy gold. The England shot-stopper has four penalty saves in the league across the past two seasons, a valuable asset for increased fantasy points. Everton have a remarkably kind opening set of fixtures, facing no top six sides in their opening six games, plus just Manchester City and Spurs across their first 14 games, taking them well into December. Defensively, the Toffees ended the season in fantastic form, with 8 clean sheets in their last 11 games. In fact, only Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea kept more shut-outs last campaign.
You can back VAR and bet on ain Everton’s opening fixture against Crystal Palace at odds of 15/8.
The Sleeper Pick: Nick Pope (4.5) – Burnley
Nick Pope is flying under the radar after injury kept him out of league football last season. With Tom Heaton off to pastures new and Joe Hart out of favour, Pope could be a bargain at the lowest starting price. Admittedly, Burnley under-performed from their usually high defensive standards last season, keeping just 8 clean sheets: it took them a long time to recover from the demands of playing Europa League football early in the season. This time around, there’s ambition that they can replicate their solidarity from 2017/18, where Pope amassed 11 clean sheets, 113 saves and 19 bonus points to finish the season with 152 FPL points. He rotates pretty well with Crystal Palace too.
The Wildcard Pick: Hugo Lloris (5.5) – Spurs
One goalkeeper who hasn’t had much traction this season is Hugo Lloris but he’s Mr Consistent in Fantasy Premier League, scoring over 140 points in five of his six Premier League seasons. Despite playing fewer minutes last season and keeping a lower total of 12 clean sheets than is traditional, he amassed his highest ever FPL total of 145 points: two penalty saves, 100 saves and 10 bonus points contributed to this boost in points. Spurs have a great run of home games to kick the campaign off, with no top six sides visiting Spurs new stadium until mid-December. After a much quieter summer, this World Cup winner looks set for yet another great fantasy season!
