Burnley-Newcastle match delayed after referees’ assessor collapses in tunnel

Ciaran Clark’s early goal helped Newcastle beat Burnley for their third straight win after starting the season winless in 10 matches.

Burnley’s 2-1 Premier League loss to Newcastle United at Turf Moor on Monday was delayed by half an hour after referees’ assessor Eddie Wolstenholme collapsed in the tunnel.

Sky Sports reported that Wolstenholme was conscious when he was taken to hospital but referee Anthony Taylor and the Premier League decided to delay the start of the match.

Burnley announced the delay on their Twitter account.

“Kick off at tonight’s game will be delayed by 30 minutes, due to a medical emergency in the players’ tunnel. Neither team or their staff are affected. The person involved has been taken to hospital in a conscious state,” the statement read.

Wolstenholme is a former Premier League referee who retired from officiating in 2003.
