Bets Of The Day: Haggas and Varian can enjoy success on home patch

Bets Of The Day: Haggas and Varian can enjoy success on home patch

Alan Dudman has ditched an old friend in the Bunbury Cup, and also has a selection in the closing race at Newmarket for his latest picks….

Solar can claim Bunbury gold in big handicap

15:30 Newmarket – Back Solar Gold @ 5/1 Sportsbook price

One of the big handicaps of the day is the Bunbury Cup, and if you are playing on the Sportsbook this is also a PROMO race.

I am finally ditching Spanish City. I have given him too many chances, as I have been floored in trying to work out if he wants 6f or 7f. My new project however is the William Haggas-trained Solar Gold, and you can back her at 5/1 on the Sportsbook.

She has only had two runs for Haggas since the switch from Charlie Hills, and I get the feeling there is plenty there to work with in terms of her mark of 96. Indeed, with two of her outings this season both at Listed level, she could be well treated.

Last time she met trouble and was denied in a run in a good race at Chelmsford. Hopefully she’ll get a clear path in this, and the quick ground should be fine as she has winning form at Bath – when firm.

Keep the faith with Varian’s Apparate

17:15 Newmarket – Back Apparate @ [4.20]

The final race on the card at HQ is a handicap over 1m4f, and I am happy to given another chance to Roger Varian’s Apparate.

I backed him in the Bibury Cup at Salisbury last time. He ran okay in third, but he didn’t make the running. Crucially, he made all to win at Newmarket back in May. A repeat of the tactics should work a treat in this small field.

He is unexposed at the trip and should get every yard on pedigree, whilst the quick ground should also be to his liking.

This also represents a slight drop down in class from the Salisbury race. He should be around the [4.0] to back as we do have the presence of the lightly-raced Godolphin horse Dubai Tradition. Hopefully he’ll be short.

Apparate could be well handicapped from 85.
