Algeria vs Nigeria
Competition: Africa Cup of Nations
Date: 14 July 2019
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
What a quarterfinal Algeria and Ivory Coast offered the lucky ones who watched their battle a few days ago… The North Africans took the lead in the 20th minute having survived a big scare earlier, had the chance to finish the game off in the second half but missed a penalty, got equalized, only to qualify in the penalty shoot, as extra time ended in a 1-1 draw, same as regular time. Djamel Belmadi, Algeria’s coach, was in tears after Ivroy Coast missed the last crucial penalty. He told reporters he would have preferred seeing his team finish the game off in regular time, but in a way, winning on penalties was a big satisfaction on its own, as the whole experience may come handy either in the semifinal or even the final. The goal they conceded to Ivory Coast was the first one in five matches in the competition. Sofiane Feghouli, Algeria’s scorer against Ivory Coast, as well as Youcef Atal, were considered doubtful the day before the semifinal, as both picked up knocks in their quarterfinal.
As expected and predicted here, Nigeria did eliminate outsiders South Africa in the quarterfinals, but not without suffering. Actually, they needed an 89th-minute goal to win 2-1, having gotten equalized 1-1 in the 71st (thanks to VAR, which started getting used in the AFCON finals). Nigeria’s German coach, Gernot Rohr, told reporters he feels the team’s main target has been reached, be in the last four, in the same tournament that saw many other favorites get kicked out much earlier. Striker Odion Ighalo, winger Ahmed Musa and defender Chidozie Awaziem, all three picked up knocks in the quarterfinal, but the day before their clash with Algeria, Rohr looked confident that he would have all three available, telling reporters that the team’s doctor assured him that none of the three is dealing with a problem serious enough to keep him out of the semifinal.
